CAR THEFT CHARGES.
YOUTH FOR OBSERVATION. CHILDREN’S COURT DECISION. In order that he might be placed In a mental hospital for observation for six months, the Hamilton youth, aged 17, who appeared on remand in the Children’s Court, Hamilton, to-day to face’ 15 charges of converting motor-cars in Hamilton recently and a further charge of theft, was remanded again by Mr F. W. Platts. The police prosecution was conducted by Detective A. J. White. Following an epidemic of audacious car conversions in Hamilton accused was arrested when in the act of converting a car on the night of July 10. The youth aepeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., In the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton two days later and was committed to the' Children’s Court. When accused appeared In the Children’s Court a fortnight ago he was further remanded until to-day. The charges involved the disappearance of 15 cars between the end of January and early July. On the night of the arrest it was alleged by the police that four cars were converted by accused. The total value of the vehicles claimed to have been stolen was over £4,000.
