FOURTH MATCH

SPRINGBOKS’ TOUR. GAME AGAINST MANAWATU. VISITORS LEAD AT HALF-TIME. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. The ground is greasy after overnight rain and the outlook is dull though there was no rain this morning for the fourth match of the Springboks’ tour against Manawatu to-day. It was thought that Craven would replace Harris and Strachan would take the place of Van Reenan in the Springboks side but as there was no further rain the team was unaltered. The tremendous Influx of visitors began early this mornfng and indications point to the crowd being the i largest ever seen at the showgrounds. Special plans have been arranged by | the police and city traffic departments for the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The following are the teams;— Springboks. Fullback.—Brand. Threequarters. Lyster, Craven, White, Bester. Halves.—Harris, Lochner. Forwards.—S. C. Louw, Lotz, Jennings, van Reenan, Nel, Bergh, Bastard, Watt. Manawatu. Fullback.—M. Waldln. Threequarters.—H. Waugh, J. Nicol, D. Bulck. Five-eighths.—J. Finlay, G. Wasiey. Halfback.—C. Edlin. Forwards.—S. E. Fell, C. Ewart, M Sullivan, Terry, Williams, Powell, McKenzie, Newman. Manawatu sustained a hot forward attack early and Finlay just failed to goal from a free kick some way out, but the home team kept up the pressure and only consistent kicking for the line saved South Africa from awkward situations. The Springbok backs several times attempted to get under way but the Manawatu backs were standing close up on them, allowing them no latitude. However, South Africa were the first to score when Brand kicked a great penalty goal after 25 minutes play. South Africa 3 Manawatu 0 Visitors’ Eight Point Lead. South Africa had the territorial advantage for the remainder of the spell and after many attempts Craven sent Lyster over for a nice try under the posts, Brand /Converting, making the half-time score: South Africa 8 Manawatu 0
