LEAGUE OF MOTHERS.
KIHIKIHI BRANCH. Golden wattle, spring flowers and greenery decorated the Kihiklhi Town Hall on July 30, when the Kihikihi branch of the League of Mothers celebrated It* second birthday and first husbands’ night with a social which proved a great success, there being about 300 present. While awaiting the arrival of the visiting branches, an enjoyable orchestral number was given by the popular Maori players under the leadership of Mr L. Brown. The programme opened with the singing of the National Anthem, afler which the president, Mrs G. McGhie, welcomed the guests and husbands. The Hamilton, Arapuni, and Tokanui Crossroads branches were well represented, each president being presented with a bouquet. Mrs Barnett, president of the Tokanui Crossroads branch and also district organiser, spoke warmly of the advancement of the Kihikihi branch of the League of Mothers since its -■formation, when the foundation members numbered six. To-day there was a membership of 30. Community singing was led by Miss Spencer, of Te Awamutu, Mrs R. Cullen, of Orakau, being the pianist, and Miss Spencer gave two humorous recitations which were greatly enjoyed. Mrs N. Middlebrook, of Te Awamutu, gave much-appreciated solos, and little Miss Nola Morriss, of Te Awamutu, in full Highland costume, gave Highland dances, followed by her sister. Miss Jean Morriss, In full Irish costume, who gave Irish jigs. A break in tlie programme was then made to enable the children present to join in games and competitions 't'lich caused much amusement, Mr E. Meyer, of Hamilton, a ventriloquist, with his doll, imitated different birds and animals, and was most interesting. With Mrs Harre as pianist and Mr Harre as director, the Kihikihi school children’s choir sang two songs very pleasantly, and under the directorship of Mrs Harre a humorous playette was given by five members of the League of Mothers, and caused much amusement. Mr Harre and Mr J. Robinson gave solos which were much appreciated, after which supper was served. The two candles were lit and blown out by Mrs Barnett, who was mainly responsible for the formation of ttie 'Kihikihi branch. The cake was then cut by the past and present presidents respectively, Mesdames Donaldson and McGhie. The final item was given by Brown’s Orchestra. The president and secretary, Mrs McGhie and Miss Temple each were presented with a bouquet of flowers for services rendered. by the vice-president, Mrs Mar quiss. Mrs Barnett was presented with a special bouquet of flowers in the colours and form of the League’s badge, the letters "L.0.M.” being worked in gold flowers and surrounded with blue and gold like the badge. Mr J. Robinson was M.C., assisted by Mr Marquiss. Before closing. Mrs McGhie thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the evening such a success, and with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne” an enjoyable function was brought to a close. • Those on the entertainment committee and responsible for the programme arrangements were: Mesdames G.
