WAIKATO PRESBYTERY

AUGUST MEETING. ADJUSTMENT OF STIPENDS. The Rev. C. L. French (Moderator) presided over the August meeting of the Waikato Presbytery held at Hamilton yesterday, there being also present: Revs.' S. J. Atkins, J. H. Coombs, H. G. Gilbert, J. H. Haslop (clerk), W. H. Hitchcock, J. H. Lilburn, D. C. Mclntyre, R. W. McKinney, A. Marshall, G. A. Naylor, S. W. Webber and J. C. Young, and Messrs W. T. Brabyn, T. R. J. Campbell, A. Fotheringham. E. E. Hooper, H. Ingham, D. C. McLeod. J. C. Mclntyre, S. C. Macky, T. W. H. Nightingale, A. M. Stewart and A. Watson. The Moderator reported that the ordination of Mr Scarrow as a home missionary in the Rotoura outfields had been conducted at a special service at Rotorua, and Mr Ashwin had been Inducted In the charge of Pukemlro. The General Assembly's Mission Committee intimated approval of the extension of the Rev. H. B. Hughes’ term at Thames. It was decided to cite all the home missionaries within the bounds of the Presbytery to attend next meeting and submit reports on their work. The Rev. G. A. Naylor submitted proposals for the annual retreat of ministers and home missionaries to be held in conjunction with the Bay of Plenty Presbytery, at Rotorua, for three days, commencing on September 13. These were approved. The subjects for discussion will be “Religion and Healing" and “Public Worship." A long discussion took place on the question of ministerial stipends, remits concerning which were sent down from the Assembly’s committee. Presbytery agreed that some adjustment was necessary, but referred the matter back to the committee with suggestions that the principle should be adopted of payment according to the ministers’ needs and the standing of the charge, a minimum being fixed for single and married men. Regarding car allowances, Presbytery considered that an allowance of 3d per mile travelled’ would be a sound principle to adopt, but-urged the oommittee to go Into a scheme operating tn a southern charge which was reported to he working satisfactorily and fairly to all parties. A proposal for the sale of the glebe at Pto Pio and utilisation of the proceeds for the renovation of the manse was referred to the House and Properly Committee with power to act when the. necessary formalities had been complied with. It was reported that the late Mrs Patterson, of Ngaruawahia, had left a bequest of £SO Lo the Ngaruawahia Manse 1-und. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 7, when It Is expected that the Moderator of the Assembly, the Right Rev. T. H. Roseveare, will be present.
