POOR BATTING

NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS MATCH WITH GLAMORGAN. HOME TEAM MAKES 229. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, July 31. The New Zealand cricketers commenced a return match against Glamorgan at Swansea to-day. The weather was beautifully fine and, as the match coincided with the start of the Bank holidays, the attendance was about 5000. The Welsh crowd showed typical fervour. The wicket was fast, but enabled the spin bowlers to turn the ball. Glamorgan was dismissed for 229 runs, and at stumps New Zealand had lost seven wickets for 116. Vivian, Lamason and Gallichan have still to bat. A Difficult Task. With Cowie under treatment In London for gastrio influenza and Dunning and Roberts unable to play, New Zealand faced a difficult task in attempting to dislodge the county, which is standing sixth in the championship table. The visitors succeeded creditably by means of very steady bowling supported by safe catching. Lamason bowled off-spinners and kept an admirable length. At one period -he delivered eight overs, including four maidens, for eight runs and three wickets. Moloney turned the ball well and maintained a good length. Page, Weir and Carson proved useful supports. Vivian, after a very fine spell of accurate bowling, split a finger fielding and retired. Gallichan kept a steady length and was remarkably inexpensive. A Sensational Opening. There was a sensational opening to New Zealand’s innings. Matthews, the former Northants fast-medium bowler, who is now coaching at Stowe School and qualified to play for the county through birth at Penarth,. took two wickets with successive balls in his first over. Clay and Jones, who are bowlers of a similar type to Goddard, also had quick successes. New Zealand scored a hundred runs in an hour, but lost all the batsmen forcing the pace. Another wicket fell In the last over. Scores:—

Bowling:—Matthews took three wickets for 39 runs, Clay one for 37, E. Jones one for 24, Davies two for 15. THIRD.TEST MATCH THE ENGLISH TEAM. ROBINS AGAIN CAPTAIN. -nlted Press Assn.—Elec. Tel.
