BUTTER DEARER.
WHOLESALE PRICES UP. EXPORT VALUE FORESHADOWED. Wholesale prices for butter in Hamilton have been raised by $d per lb. as from to-day, when the net rates will be:—Finest grade, is 2id; first grade, Is 2d; second grade. Is lid; whey butter, Is id. This is the first alteration in the wholesale rate since guaranteed prices were introduced in August, 1936, and though the Government has delayed the announcement of the export value this year, it may be taken that an increase in the guaranteed rate Is anticipated, as the local wholesale rates are based on that level. The guaranteed price will be retrospective to the beginning of the season. From inquiries made In Hamilton to-day. retail rates based on the Increased wholesale prices have not yet been fixed and it is apparently not yet known whether there will be any increase on the domestic market. Retail prices are usually 2d a pound more than wholesale prices, though some stores work on a smaller margin, but apparently some of the smaller traders consider that an increase of a halfpenny in the pound would provide more trouble than profit if passed on to the consumer.
