HALF-HOUR PARKING
OLD BY-LAW ENFORCED. WARNING TO THE PUBLIO. MAIN STREET RESTRICTIONS. | Following a recent decision of tho Hamilton Borough Council that the old j by-law relating to 30 minute parking In the business area would be strictly enforced by the traffic officers, a rigid check has been maintained over motorcars in Victoria Street recently, with the result that six Hamilton motorists were charged in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day with a breach of the restriction. The charges were brought by Traffic Inspector W. E. Nicholson. “These are a series of charges relating to a by-law which has been In force for many years. I have been instructed to be more vigorous against motorists who offend," said the traffic inspector in explaining to the court that a chalk mark had been made on the tyres of parked cars, many of which were still not removed an hour or more later. In producing the by-law to tho court Mr Nicholson said that he was not asking for any serious penalty but he desired the cases to be treated more as a warning to other motorists. Harry Birch, whose car was parked for over three and a-half hours was convicted and ordered to pay 12s court costs. Thomas Allen Ewan, who parked for over two hours, Charles Frederick Hall, who parked for nearly three hours, Ernest Morell Metcalfe. Harold A. Milne and Thomas George Simons were each convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10s. Limits Indicated. The by-law which the defendants violated Is as follows: ‘‘No person being the owner or in charge of any vehicle (other than a cab, motor-cab, licensed cart or publio motor van on a public stand) shall permit such vehicle to remain standing In any part of Victoria Street between Hood Street and London Street, or on the West side of Victoria Street between Hood Street and Bridge Street, or In any part of Colllngwood Street, between Victoria Street and Alexandra Street, or in Garden Place within three chains of Victoria Street, for a longer period than 30 minutes any time between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., any day except Sunday. Signs have been marked over the restricted areas. Traffic Inspector i Nicholson told a Waikato Times reporter to-day that it was his intention to enforce the by-law very strictly with a view to improving trafflo conditions in Hamilton. A check will be kept over motorists and every offender will be dealt with. The motorists charged to-day ali offended against the by-law last Wednesday, when the Springboks’ match attracted a dense volume of traffic to Hamilton.
