ROVERS TROUNCED.
GAME AT TE AWAMUTU. (Special to Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Sunday. At Te Awamutu on Saturday the two local teams met in the Waikato Stag competition and Te Awamutu emerged the victors by 13 points to 0. The game was very ragged. Following are the teams: —Rovers : Martin, L. Young, Quinn, Cunningham, Preston, B. Elliott, L. Wilson, T. Thomson, Ngahoe, E. Iloome'S, Niooll, H. Grant, Hinton, C. Jowsey, and J. Hinton. Te Awamutu: Gedge, Tippett, W. Tombs, P. Bell, Bennett, J. Hanna, M. Bell, W. Daniells, McAlpine, J. Wynyard, M. Grace, H. Wynyard, L. May, A. West and J. Turney. Mr R. L. Adams was referee. The game commenced quietly, with Te Awamutu having the territorial advantage until Ngahoe oame through fast to block the fullback’s clearing kiok. Play continued mostly In midfield, with both teams making the play open. H. Wynyard dribbled through and put Rovers on the defensive. The pressure was maintained for several minutes. At length Tombs secured, and had sufficient pace to open the scoring for Te Awamutu with a try. M. Bell converted. Within two minutes the effort was repeated, when Tombs sent to M. Bell to Hanna, who scored wide out. McAlpine failed with the kick. Rovers attacked but lost the advantage, and in a great dribbling rush Te Awamutu got past Rovers’ twenty-five line, where Tombs picked up and dived for the line, to score nicely. Bell converted. Te Awamutu 13, Rovers 0. After half-time Te Awamutu again attaoked, ( Turney and 11. Wynyard racing to the line, but the defenoe held. Rovers had to force. Then play worked up to Te Awamutu’s twenty-five line, but Rovers were penalised and open play ensued, Te Awamutu gradually gaining ground. P. Bell narrowly missed a field goal. Keeping up the pressure, Hanna out through and Te Awamutu attaoked in open formation, until Cunningham secured and found the line. Close play by the forwards ensued. Hard play followed near Rovers’ twenty-five line. Then McAlpine had a penalty kick from just inside half-way, and the ball rebounded from the cross-bar. Rovers worked to Te Awamutu’s twenty-five, where Young had a penalty klok, but failed. In mid-field again nnd Rovers were steadily pushed back, but they rallied in a solid rush. Both packs were playing hard football and the Te Awamutu backs flashed through, until a forward pass stopped the attack. A moment later Te Awamutu were penalised and Young found the line. Rovers Improved their position, but Hanna sent them back, and Te Awamutu attacked, but the pace was slower. Then May kicked high and when Young tried to save Wynyard blocked him and May dived for a try, but it was disallowed. A scrum followed. The ball was neatly heeled, and P. Bell put his brother over for a try, which also was disallowed, for a forward pass. Rovers were slill defending when the final bell sounded. Rovers kept the ball in and got a penalty kick. Te Awamutu carried on, with Turney and Tombs handling nicely, but the ball went dead and the game ended: Te Awamutu .. .. 13 Rovers .. .. . . 0
