INTERESTING FUNCTION.
BALL FOR SPRINGBOKS. VERY WIDELY ATTENDED. I A function which captured public interest to an unusual degree and attracted a large and widely representative attendance was the ball held In the Frankton Town Hall last evening by the Waikato Rugby Union in honour of the Springboks, who arrived in Hamilton yesterday. The visitors were accorded a very warm welcome, and the function was from all points : of view a very great success. The hall had been transformed by i artistic finger* and presented a charming and colourful scene, which was enhanced by the gay frocks of the dancers. A canopy of swaying stream- ! ers was overhead and small clusters of bright balloons hung in rows across the hall, a row of small flags dominating the centre of the hall. Huge clusters of golden mimosa covered the spectators’ balcony and were massed on either side of the hall with other greenery and fern fronds. Clumps of greenery were arranged about the walls and looked cool and charming, and had transformed' the stage. Potted palms and punga i fronds were arranged about the stage, while along the front were strings of bunting with punga fronds underneath which threw their brightness In sharp relief.
The colours of the two teams, Springboks and Waikato-King Coun-try-Thames Valley, black, gold and scarlet, and green and gold
L. „ had been cunningly introduced throughout the entire decorative scheme, streamers in these shades being artistically arranged on either side of the hall in the centre, and in diamond shape on the trellis work of the stage. The supper-room boasted a canopy of streamers in the teams' colours overhead, flags, bunting and punga fronds about the walls and a charming clump of fine bamboo and mimosa about the central pillar with the colours entwined in the greenery. The table decorations were charmingly carried out in green and gold, with vivid golden Iceland poppies and small potted palms set along the long tables.
A large marquee had been arranged as a lounge for sitting out, which was much appreciated, and was arranged with potted palms, clusters of mimosa blossom and green and gold streamers. Music played by the Blind Institute Orchestra, from Auckland, added greatly to the gay spirit of the evening, and novelty dances were warmly enjoyed. The evening opened with tlie Springboks’ song, played by the orchestra. Mr C. G. Hunt was M.C.
