ELECTORAL CHANGES
NEW NORTH ISLAND SEAT CHALMERS LOST IN SOUTH. MANY BOUNDARIES AMENDED (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Provisional electoral boundaries determined by the representation commissions appointed to adjust the boundaries in accordance with the distribution of population revealed by the census taken last year were announced tonight by the Minister In charge of the Electoral Department, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason. The South Island loses one -seat In the House of Representatives, that of Chalmers, at present held by Mr A. Campbell (Labour) and the North Island gains one. Oroua, now held by Mr J. G. Cobbe, a member of the previous Ministry, is absorbed, partly by Rangitikei and partly by Manawatu, and new electorates are formed on the outskirts of Wellington and Auckland. Lodging of Objections. The Minister emphasised the fact that the Electoral Act required that when the commissions proposed to alter the boundaries of an existing electoral district, due notice of the proposed boundary or approximate boundaries must be published in the Gazette, and objections in writing might be lodged with the commission proposing to make the alteration. The commission concerned was bound to consider any objections so lodged before coming to a final determination. It should be understood that the boundaries mentioned in the statement were provisional boundaries. A new electorate was proposed at Otahuhu, a few miles .south of Auckland City, and a new electorate also round the outskirts of the Hutt Valley. “Two new electorates in the North Island are thus provided," said Mr Mason, “but the net gain Is only one, for it is proposed to eliminate the Oroua electorate.” The greatest change in Auckland City seats is that of Auckland East, which now Includes the borough of Devonport. Grey Lynn practically remains the same. Auckland West and Central gain toward the east, the latter skirting the Domain. Auckland Suburbs loses the borough of Birkenhead. Eden and ftoslcill suffer slight alterations. Parnell is renamed Remuera and loses a small part south of Mount St. Fohn. Onehunga Includes, the borough of Onehunga, the greatest parts of the One Tree Hill borough, and Ellerslie town district. This formerly comprised the greater part of the Manukau electorate, this name having been lost. New Otahuhu Electorate. Otahuhu, the new seat, lies to the west of the Main South Road south of Ellerslie town district, portion of which is included, and extends south to the Wairoa River. The borough of Otahuhu and the town districts of Papatoetoe and Howick are included. Waitemata Includes the boroughs of Birkenhead, Northcote and Takapuna and extend? northward to Include Silverdale and Helensville, the southern boundary at Kumeu remaining unaltered. Bay of Islands loses Hikurangl and the surrounding district to Marsden, the latter district losing on the south Warkworth and Waiwera to Kaipara, which in turn loses ITelensville. Franklin remains as at present, this and Egmont being the only districts in the North Island to do so. Hauraki now extends from the Wairoa River on the north to the Hamil-ton-Te Aroha railway line and follows the Waihou River to the sea, the western boundary remaining practically unaltered. Thames Includes the counties of Great Barrier, Coromandel, Thames and Ohinemurl, including the interior boroughs as well as Te Aroha. Hamilton Alterations. Tauranga extends to the Rangitaik! River and now includes the Matamata borough and the immediately surrounding district. Rotorua is very little altered, .the principal amendment being the exclusion of Matamata from Hinuera northward. Hamilton loses parts of Rototuna and Rukuhla. Waikato extends from the Hamllton-Te Aroha railway to the Punlu River, Inoludlng Te Awamutu, Plrongla and Paterangl, which have been excluded frorti Raglan. Waltomo, with the exception of the exclusion of Te Awamutu, remains practically unaltered. Waimarino exlends southward to include the borough of Taihape. The northern boundary of Hawke’s Bay follows the Waikaremoana Road, the borough of Wairoa also being included in that electorate. The Gisborne district includes the whole of Cook county west of the Waipaoa River. The Bay of Plenty extends from Gisborne to the Rangltaiki River.
The North Island will be entitled to 4 8 of the 80 seats in the House of Representatives, compared with 47 at present, and the South Island to 32., compared with 33 now.
