PARTITION DISAPPROVED. PROTEST BY SYRIAN GOVERNMENT INSURMOUNTABLE DIFFICULTIES. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlg-m (Re'ceived July 23, 3.15 p.m.) DAMASCUS, July 22. The Syrian Government has addressed a Note to the French Higher Commissioner, expressing the public’s unanimous disapproval of the Palestine dismemberment scheme, which bears the seeds of insurmountable difficulties. It asks that the Note be forwarded to the League of Nations. DEFEAT FOR GOVERNMENT. MATTER OF MAJOR POLICY. AGAIN IN THE MELTING POT. United Press Assn.—Elr>e. Tel ropwlg-ht. LONDON, July 22. Critics describe the acceptance by the House of Commons of Mr Churchill’s amendment on Palestine without a division as a heavy defeat for the Government on a matter of major policy. point out that it means that the Government will still be able to go before the League’s Mandates Commission with its proposals, but must report back to the' British Parliament before taking further action. Moreover, say the critics, the Government will not be able to claim at Geneva that its proposals have Parliament’s approval.
