AMATEUR CYCLING.

THE HAMILTON CLUB. LATEST RACE DESCRIBED. Under excellent riding conditions 20 competitors faced the starter last Saturday, when the Hamilton Amateur Sports Club’s cycle road race from the Hamilton East Post Office to Banks’ corner and back was held. The distance was approximately 17$ miles. The race, which was full of interest, resulted in a win for V. Shaw, while H. Liddington and B. Latta filled second and third place respectively.

The first to turn at Banks’ corner were C. Jaokson and V. Shaw, followed li minutes later by T. Brown, their co-marker, whom they had dropped at Hinton’s Gully. There was a lapse of 10 seconds before a group of 10 riders, including H. Liddington and B- Latta, both of whom gained places in the race, rounded the corner. The next to pass this point was R. Forsythe, who rode alone. He was unable to catch the riders ahead, who were making an excellent pace. Following closely on Forsythe came R. Tasker and C. Burr. These riders had gained 15 seconds on the former competitor, while McOnie and A. Ready, who had gained 30 seconds on him, came up fast. The scratch man, T. Shaw, turned 22 seconds later. He had lost on the start and was obviously to be deprived of time honours.

The pace was increased on the run home, and the first group had sorted themselves out for the remainder of the race- T. Shaw and C. Jackson, who by this time were suffering from cramp, were unable to continue. The remainder of the. field had no chance of catching the leading pack, and V. Shaw, who was being fast overhauled, managed to win by about 20 yards from H. Liddington, who beat Latta and Johnston by a wheel in a desperate finish.
