WANDERERS’ SURPRISE. IMPROVED FORM SHOWN, GLEN MASSEY OVERWHELMED. A feature of the senior association football matoh at Seddon Park on Saturday was the improved form of Wanderers, who after there poor showing against Pukemiro, were not expected to get a decision over Rovers who j were fielding a strong combination I containing some very promising junij ors. However, the indifferent showing of the Rovers’ front line nullified what opportunities the red and whites had of scoring. It must be conceded that it was rather the mediocrity of the losers than the brilliance of the winners, which gave Wanderers the game. A Drawn Game. As was anticipated, Pukemiro, playing on their home ground managed to hold Starr-Town, last year’s champions, to a draw. On the form they have been showing on the last two Saturdays Pukemiro will be hard to dispose of and have an even chance of finishing the season at the top of the competition. Glen Massey appear to be a good deal below senior standard, as even though they were not expected to hold Rotowaro, the latter were all over them to pile up a six-nil win. Saved Rovers from a Cricket Soore. Rovers can thank their fullbacks, Clarke and Parkes, and Webster, goalie, for saving them from having a •cricket score run up against them. Time and again when things looked dangerous the fullbacks cleared, while during numerous tense moments in the goalmouth Webster defended like a champion and he must be well in the running for representative honours. Forward Lines Poor. Wanderers’ re-arranged forward line was hardly a success, Stewart being ineffective at centre forward. . C. Crabb, inside right, played another good game, his goal being a really fine solo effort. Undoubtedly the failure of Rovers can be attributed in a large degree to the poor showing of the forwards who, even when they were presented with opportunities of scoring, could not find the net. D. Crabb Outstanding. Outstanding among the halves was D. Crabb, of Rovers, who was respon- j sible for a really fine exhibition, his passing and positional play being exemplary and his defence of a very high order. With the experience he has already gained—he visited Australia with the last New Zealand team —and the form he is showing at present 'Crabb will be a hard man to keep out of the New Zealand team to oppose the Australian tourists. Hallyburton-Johnstone Bhield Contest. A South Auckland representative team will travel to Auckland on Saturday, June 6, to contest the Hally-burton-Johnstone Shield at Blandford Park against the Auckland B representatives. The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the F.A. trophy game between Auckland and Canterbury.
