COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. BRIGHT GAMES PROVIDED. (Special to Times.) CAMBRIDGE, Sunday. Fine weather prevailed on Saturday, when the Cambridge Rugby Sub-union’s competitions were continued at the square, Leamington and High School grounds. Bright football was provided at the square, when Northern played Hautapu and United met Leamington in the second encounter. Northern v. Hautapu. We tore (Northern) had a kick at goal rrom a handy position, but the ball Just fell short. Led by S. Miller, the Hautapu forwards rushed play* to Northern's line, where the hall Tell dead. From the drop out the Northern pack reversed the position, and the forwards were battling on the line until Hautapu’s position was eased by a good line-kick. The game was Immediately returned, but when the full back, Kepa, railed to take a long kick, Hautapu were dangerous until F. Shaw found .touch. Time sounded arter a spell of rugged play with no score on the hoard. Resuming, Ilautapu became aggressive, and J. Preece neatly cut in to beat three men to pass to J. Holmes, who attempted a held goal, but the ball bounced ofT a Northern player to go dead. Hautapu were now throwing the ball about in tine style. An excellent movement saw Northern hard-pressed. From a scrummage near the line title ball came out to J. Kelly, who ran between the posts to score the flrst try, which he converted - . Hautapu continued to attack, and Northern were required to free several times. With a good dribbling rush Northern gained tihe length of the field, and when Wetere fell on the ball, he was unlucky to have the leather kicked Into touch. R. Peake was the next to score, and this was the result or securing from a melee and diving over the line. Kelly missed with t'he kick, making the final score: Hautapu 8, Northern 0. Leamington v. United. From the kick-off United made the pace, and an early penalty saw Hewett kicking, but the bail hit the mark men. Leamington gave a demonstration of their powerful back line, every man handling, but the defence held, and Wilson and Meredith returned the game to blue and white territory. Leamington were again seen In a brilliant movement. Holmes and Peake dashing 75 yards for N. Hall to Intercept. Securing from a ruck H. Peake was dangerous. and, with Martin in support, only had the full back to heat.. Haworth tackled his man, and Leamington lost a certain try when Martin railed to handle. Talcing a good pass Hague beat his man, and with three men in support handed to Wilson who went over in the corner. Hewett added' the extra points with an excellent cross kick.
Reversing the play Leamington swept up-field to opposition territory, and from the ruck on the line Lewis was successful when he dived. N. Holmes made a good attempt at goal, missing by a row yards; United 5, Leamington 3.
The second spell saw Leamington the aggressors at the start, and Holmes was again unlucky to miss with a penalty kick in a handy position. Leamington made a great rally, and McDonnell went close to
scoring, but Haworth, the blue and black full back, saved with a splendid line-kick. With hair the spell gone and two points the difference, the game became very spirited, the next try coming when Hammond kicked through Tor Wilson to follow up very fast to go over. iTewett’* kick at goal railed. When a long kick Trom Wilson sent the ball to the Learnington line, Dodd followed up to miss with his dive, but Meanie was on the scene, and touched down for United well out. Hewett added the extra points, leaving the final score—United 13, Leamington 3.
