UNION SALARIES.
NO FABULOUS SUIVIB. ALLEGATIONS REFUTED A vigorous denial of a suggestion that trades union officials were receiving exorbitant salaries was given by speakers at a meeting of Hamilton workers in the Toorak Hall yesterday afternoon, when plans for the industrial organisation of the district were considered
“ There has been a statement In circulation that union secretaries were receiving as much as £l2 a week for their services,” stated Mr G. Davis, secretary of the Auckland Drivers’ Union. “In refuting it, I can state that, to the best of my knowledge, there has been no man in the Auckland Trades Hall getting more than £5 a week. Many are paid nothing more than a few shillings and the position has been grossly misrepresented.
Mr H. Campbell, secretary of the Auckland Painters’ Union, corroborating Mr Davis' statement, added that he would have earned more by taking up relief work.
It was suggested by several speakers that an authoritative refuation of the allegations should be made by the Prime Minister, Mr Savage.
