WHATAWHATA TRAGEDY.
THREE LABOURERB* DEATHS. COMPASSIONATE ALLOWANCE. A compassionate allowance by the Covernment to the widows of three Public Works labourers, Messrs. W. Jarvis, H. L. Williams and W. Arkman. who were killed when returning from work at Te Pahu on March. 18 in a collision between two motor-lorries, was sought by speakers at a meeting of workers in Hamilton yesterday afternoon. Mr C. A. Barrell, M.P., who presided, said that the proper course to secure an allowance was to prepare a petition which he would place before the House and sponsor in every possible way in committee. This was the only way in which a grant could be legalised. It was decided that a deputation should wait upon the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, in Hamilton on May 20, in an endeavour to further the interests gi the dependents of the deceased.
