KANGAROOS.
FEAR OF EXTINCTION. HUNDRED DEAD ON ONE STATION. (From a Correspondent). SYDNEY, April 20. The Chief Veterinary .Surgeon (Mr Max Henry) and several others associated with the Department of Agriculture are carrying out investigations In an effort to solve the mystery of a disease which is decimating the kangaroo population of the Riverina. Dr. Henry said to-day that it appeared as though the disease would result soon in the complete extinction of the kangaroo in that area. On one station alone, 100 dead kangaroos had been found. He explained that so far the disease was unknown, but It was thought it was due to parasites. Apparently, there was no poison in the herbage, otherwise the complaint would undoubtedly have spread to other animals. He added that it was apparent the disease luckily was confined to kangaroos. Several carcases have been sent to Sydney for autopsies. No reports from other parts of New South Wales of a similar disease have been received. nor do the records of the Department show a similar occurrence ill past years.
