“BAD WEATHER” FLYING.
ASTONISHING FIGURES. Air Service Training—the big flying school at Hamble, on Southampton Water—has returned astonishing figures of activity in January and February, which will be remembered as the worst weather months in England for many years. In the latter month school flying totalled 1,756 hours 35 minutes—a record for the school—following upon no fewer than 1,401 hours in the appalling weather of January. The laconic school report talks of “prevailing adverse conditions.” Storms, low cloud, mist and general climatic unpleasantness did not keep instructors and pupils on the ground. On one day in January 104 hours 20 minutes—a new record—were flown in a determined effort to offset time lost on “really bad” days.
