HAMILTON BOROUGH.

THE COUNCIL MEETING. SEDDON ROAD PETITION. LEASE OF SANITARY RESERVE. The Hamilton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. R. Fow) presiding. Also present were Grs. B. H. Andrews, G. Lafferty, S. V. Tyler, C. J. W. Barton, F. H. Claphnm. F. ,T. Farrell, D. D. Wilson, R. Cobbe. J. E. Tidcl, F. W. Luxford, and W. Bourne, and Messrs R. Worley (engineer), W. L. Wad del (town clerk), and I. Webster (electrical engineer). On various grounds 33 residents of Seddon Road petitioned the council to have the thoroughfare channelled and provided with a permanent footpath. They pointed out that Seddon Road was one of the main thoroughfares of Hamilton. The water tables In wet weather did not conduct away the water, which stood therein In places for weeks on end, a state of affairs dangerous to the health of the children of the street, and by breeding mosquitoes a menace to the general health. The matter was referred to the Works Committee and the engineer for report. Coursing Club Lease. On behalf of the Hamilton Coursing Club Mr TI. D. Aitken, referring lo the club's proposed lease of 1 lio sanitary reservo at Whiliora for the establishment of a course, pointed out that in view of tho amount of money to be expended in ploughing, levelling, grassing and fencing ihe area a reduction in the rental of £3O per annum would be appreciated. The club had already let a contract to plough, level and grass the area. The Mayor moved the confirmation of the resolution fixing the rental at £3O. Cr. Wilson pointed out that the land cost about £2O annually in upkeep, and he moved that Hie rental be reduced to £lO annually providing the club kept the land clean and tidy to the approval of the engineer. Support to this proposal was given by Cr. Andrews, who said the small rental could be levied only until Hie club was firmly established. If a “Waterloo" was run good gates would result and Ihc club would be in a bettor financial position. After further discussion the Mayor suggested that the rent remain at £3O. but at the end of two years the council make a rebate of £lO on each year. It. was finally decided to allow the club to have the land rent free for the first year. Hayos Paddock. The secretary of the Hamilton Rugby Union wrote accepting the council's offer lo take over part of Haves' paddock for football, and expressed the thanks of the union for allowing it the use of Ihc ground.— The letter was received. Obstetrical Fund. On behalf of the Obstetrical Endowment Appeal Fund Dr. Sophia do la Mare asked for permission to hold a “ Flag Day ” during this month, and added that the local executive hoped that the council would contribute to the fund.—lt was decided to grant permission and make a donation of £25. Cr. Barton considered Hamilton had done its duty in this respect, as it had contributed substantially towards the new maternity home. The Mayor said he understood the fund would be devoted to enhance knowledge in midwifery and equip the doctors. The nursing homes would then become more effective. Cr. Lafferty said the charges for maternity nurses and general expenses were in his opinion exorbitant. He would sooner see this expense to Hie working man reduced rather than a sum of £2OOO paid to a professor of obstetrics.

New Bridge Scheme. Referring to tile new bridge proposal over the Waikato at Hamilton, Mr A. A. “Woodward, engineer to the Waikato County Council, stated that ho had been endeavouring to Interview the Minister of Public Works regarding a subsidy for the bridge, and would inform the council when definite arrangements were made. — The letter was received. Street Lighting. As a result of a communication from the electrical engineer it was decided to erect an extra street light at the river end of Clydo Street. On the recommendation of the electrical engineer and Cr. Bourne.it was also decided to install a bracket street light in Naylor Street halfway between Graham and McFarlane Streets. Hire of Town Hall. Mr 11. G. Sergei, headmaster of Southwell School, applied for hire of the Town Hall on November 23 and 24 of this year. For the Hamilton Little Theatre Society Mr A. M. Fahey applied for use of the hall on the following dates: —April 7 and 8, July 28 and 2‘J, November 10 and 11. A committee was appointed to consider the matter and revise the tariff. Suspension Lighting.

A plan was submitted by the electrical engineer showing the positions of four proposed suspension lights in Jlood, Alexandra and Collingwood Streets, the cost of the erection of which was estimated at £25. The Post and Telegraph Department had given permission for the use of their poles. It was decided io proceed with the work. The engineer was instructed to bring down a comprehensive report on the lighting of London Street.
