BIG SEA FISHING.
AT MERCURY BAY. MATAMATA PARTY'S HAUL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) THAMES, Tuesday. Striped marlin swordfish have made their appearance off Mercury Bay in laTge numbers. Four Matamata men, Messrs W. Hutchinson, F. W. Hutchinson, D. M. Hay and F. R. Gibson, had as many as 12 fish on their lines during one day, managing to secure four. The large launch Dauntless was used.
The party left Mercury Bay on Saturday. They hooked three fish on the Mercury Bay bank, but lost two through the gear breaking. Another was landed off the bank, while the fourth was caught five miles from the Aldermen Islands.
Tlie party estimated that they saw between forty and fifty swordfish under their boat at one time. In the clear water they could see the fish taking the bait. As one fisherman put it, they looked like a drove of zebras. The weights of those caught were 325, 300, 295, and 2821 b.
