GOLOMINING AT THE THAMES.

Is an article dealing with the mining operations carried on at the Thames and surrounding districts during tho past year, a contemporary gives the following figures of tho gold won,.which is exclusive of that produced in the up-country mines Oz dwt Thames County 28,570 13 Thames Borough 11,981 5 Ohinenmri County 6,54!) 4 Piako County 948 9 Total , 48,049 11 Of the up-country districts, Waihi stands first on account of tlio prominence given to it by tho success which hai attended the operations carried on by the Waihi Gold and Silver Mining Company. This company is carrying on operations on a very extensive scale in their mine, and the output of ore for the past twelve months amounts to no less a tonnage than i 5,090 tons, which yielded bullion to the value of £44,224. The total return is £19,568 in excess of that of the previous 12 months, which amounted in value to £24,656, and it brings the total value of the bullion won by the company since Julyj 18S9, up to £90,658. It will be seen that nearly half of this value was obtained during the past year, which in itself speaks for the success that has attended the company's operations. That better results have not attended the year's operations, however, is not tho fault of the companies who own and work the mines, for I find on looking over the list of calls made during the year that, in addition to expending the value of the gold won no less than twenty-nine companies have been compelled to draw upon their subscribed capital, and that a sum of £45,000 has been so raised, apart from that contributed by local syndicates, small claim-holders, and tho values of the Useful work done by tributers. Against this large expenditure, the sum of only £3667 10s has been paid in dividends, which were contributed by the following companiesWaiotahi, £1500; Cambria, £lll7los | and the Hazelbank, £IOSO.
