SPORTING.
NGARUAWAHIA RACES,
The abovo races came off in Mr Clow's paddock at Ngaruawahia on Saturday last, and were the most successful yet held by that club. The mornine broke fine, but Bhortly aftor two o'clock rain set in, which slightly marred the day's enjoyment; otherwise everything passed off pleasantly. There wore a few stalls during the day, but luckily the riders escaped unhurt. Constables White and Cavanagh were present, but their services were not at any time required. A tntalisator was on the ground, presided over by Messrs Adams and Andrews, but only about £250 went through the machine. The largest dividend was £2 lGi on Folly in the Ngaruawahia Cup, who also appropriated the Ngaruawahia Plate and Flying Stakes. A large nnmber of bookies were present, and all appeared to be doing a good business, Mr J, Smith, of the Wiiipa Hotel, attended to the wants of the public, while several refreshment booths were on the ground. The Huntly Brat* Band nas present under Bandmaster Skelleran, and helped to enliven the proceedings. MrE. B. Cox as starter, and Mrß.'Rathborne as judge, gave general satisfaction, while Mr T. W. Simpson, the energetic secretary, worked hard to make the meeting a success, The following is a detailed account of the racing :- Handicap Hurdle Race, of 25sovs, One. mile and three-quarters, Mr C. Weal's Tupara (Weal) ...- ... 1 Mr G. Currie's Fort-a-Bras 2 Mr J, Sutton's Sandy Muir 3 Hopeful Kate and Albnry also started, Pretender, Nero and Paparoa being scratched, Sandy Muir took the lead at the fall of the flag, and led the first time round. At the back of the courw he was displaced by Tupara and Fort-a-Bras, but the former having the most left in him won easily by two lengths. Dividend, £l. •■• Maides Plate, of 15sovs. One mile, Mr T.Haunon'a Duchess (Smith) ... 1 Mr Tauwhara Katipa'a La Roy 2 Mr H. Windsor's Caprice ... 3 Last Chance, Earshot and H»kinri also started., Taffy, Orphan Boy, Folly and Sweetheart were scratched. After a short delay at the post the flag fell to a beautiful start. Last Chance led past the julge's box, but going round the turn Earshot came to grief which caused Caprice to run off the course. Turning into the straight Duchess and Le Roy were .together, but the mare drew away at the finish and won as she liked. Dividend, £2los. Nqaroawahia Cop Handicap, of 50aovs, One and a-balf miles. Mr J. Muir'* Folly (Gillie) 1 Mr L. Ward's Orini 2 Mr J. C. Booth's Waltzer 3 Raglan was the only other starter, Transit, Ingorina and Duchess being scratched, This race needs no description, as Folly went to the front and won in a canter by about 50 yards. Raglan pulled np dead lame after completing half the distance, Dividend, £2l6s. Novel Race, of 20sovs. One mile. Mr P. Jones' Ingare (Shaw) ,„ ..; 1 Mr F. Jolly's Wilfred 2 Mr W. Singer's Taffy 3 Ingare led all the way and won easily by a head. Dividend, £1 14s. The winner was put up for sale and bought by Mr T. Wise for £ls, NOABUAWAHIA PLATE HANDICAP, of 15 sovs, One and a-quarter miles, Mr J. Muir's Folly (Gillie) 1 Mr W. J. Sayer's Transit 2 Mr G. Currie's Fort-a-Bras 3 Viceroy, Barshot, Last Chance and Paparoa also started, Waltzer, Orini and Memorandum were scratched. This was another easy victory for Folly, who won by six lengths. Dividend, 19s, Selling Hurdles, of 20aovs, One and ahalf miles. Mr W. Macminniman's Hopeful Kate (Macminniman) 1 Mr J. Sutton's Sandy Muir 2 Mr W. Singer's Taffy 3 Bob Sawyer and Jack alsi» started. Hopeful Kate took the load and led until entering the straight the last time, where Sandy Muir raced up alongside of her, and a splendid race home resulted in a head victory for Hopeful Kate. Dividend, 13s. Flying Stakes Handicap, of 15sovs. Three-quarters of a mile, Mr J, Muir's Folly (Gillie) 1 Mr L. Ward's Orini 2 Mr G. A. McGlashan's Minnie... - ... 3 Caprice, Transit, Viceroy, Le Roy and Duchess also ran, Waltzer, Raglan, Last Chance, Ingare, Albnvy and Memorandum were scratched. Viceroy and Duchess were the first to move, but soon surrendered the lead to Folly, who never gave her opponents a chance, winning with the greatest of ease by four lengths, Dividend; £1 7s 6d. ■ '
