(l)Y TELEOIIAI'H.—OWN COUItKSPONOm). Auckland, Last Night. Thk Police Court to-day was crowded to witness Walter IJentley in the totally neiv role of defendant in an information brought against liim by the police. He was charged with having on the litli January committed a breach of tho by-laws by allowing the open space leading to the seats in the Opera House to be overcrowded. Mr Bentley defended himself, and contended that the' real fact was that there had been an'altercation between Lolir, his manager, and Sergeant Gamble, and the latter came on the night in question with constables, prepared to find fault.' Tho sergeant cherished animosity against Luhr, After hearing'the evidence, the magistrate said that although if lie decided on technical grounds he would impose a lino, bethought the case should be judged on the grounds of equity. The case was dismissed.
At a meeting of the New Zealand Insurance- Company to-day tho report was adopted. Mr Boardman stated that over £4OOO had been written otf for depreciation during the last four year->, without any pressure from the auditors.
