HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tub monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers at 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, there being present; His Worship the Mayor (Mr Jutin Parr) in tlm chair, and Crs, D. Salmon, W. Junes, J as, Reid, R. P. S,indes, C. Tippen, and Tims, Qaaltrough. Crossing.—Mr W. Winter applied for a crossing over the public drain fronting bis property in Hamilton East.—Or. Jones moved that Crs. Tippen and Reid enquire into this matter, as to whether the drain is a public one or not, and report at next meeting.-Seconded by Cr, Tippen and carried.

Roil.—Applications were received from tho General Manager of tho Bank of Now Zealand and the Inspector of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited), asking that Messrs James Huino and 6. Iristram, lion. sec. of the late Hamilton Brass Band, wrnto: " In rosponse to your letter of the llitli ultimo, tho Hamilton Brass Band liavo returned to tho Bur nigh Council tho instruments claimed by them as custodians for the public. We regret that the Council should have seen fit to tako an ai bitraiy stop that ha j been one of the principal causes that has I'd to tho breaking up nf a band that has always given its assistance to chi-ritablo purposes and the amusement of the public. I have to request that yon will kindly return tho guarantee given on our behalf by Messrs Pearson and Buxton, and trust that tho Council in handing over the instruments to any other body will take care to see that the interests of the public, to whom the instruments really belong, are as well conserved as they have been by us and that they shall not be used to aggrandise the funds of any organisation already supported by public money. '—Mr John S. Edgecombe, secretary of tno Hamilton Light Infantry Volunteers, applied on behalf nf tho volunteers for the nsi of the band instruments lately returned by tho now defunct Hamilton Brass Band.-The Clerk stated that tho instruments had been handed in.—Cr. Sandes moved that a receipt be given for them, and that Messrs Buxton and Pearson's guarantee be returned to them as requested.-Seconded by Cr. D. Salmon and enrmd.—Cr. Reid, boing interested, left the chamber.-Cr. Jones proposed that the request of Mr Kdgecumbe bo granted on condition that a proper guarantee ta given for their return in the same condition as received.—Cr. Qualtrough seconded the motion, which was carried. . . Sonsinv.-Tha Treasury wrote notifying that £lllss subsidy had been forwarded.Received. Runt.—The secretary of the District of Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote, statin? that Mr I. Coates on behalf nf tho Borough Council had agreed to accept £!) as rental for the offices used by the Board and part nf the strong room.— The Mayor said that he did not consider £9 wus sufficient but ho would nut like the Council to refuse it. They should accept it at present with tho hope of getting something more at a future timp,—Cr. D. Salmon moved that the Council accept the offer of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board of £9 a year.—Seconded by Cr.R, F. Sandes. —As an amendment Cr. Reid moved that the Connc'l do not accept less than that formerly paid by the Hospital Board for rent of office.-Seconded by Cr. Tippin.-On the amendment being put it was carried the voting being, For: Crs. Tippin, Reed, Jones, and Qualtrough. Against: The Mayor and Crs. Sandes and D. Jones moved that the Council ask the Domain Board to pay what it can towards the liquidation of the interest due to the Council and that any future funds available bo devoted to the samfl purpose until the debt is naid.— Seconded by Cr, Reid.—Cr. Tippin said the Council could not dictate to the Domain Board what it should do with the funds which may come in. Tho Council should make out its account and ask for its reduction. That was all it could do.—Cr. Sandes spoke in tho same strain.—Tho motion was then put and carried, Crs. Sandes, D. .Salmon and Tippin voting agaimt, Rui'OBTS —The Works Committee rennrted that the following work in the Borough is required in addition to that already authorised; Rostrevor-stieoc tu tie gravelled, and water tables cleaned nut; No, 1 Bridge, a portion of approach on South sido to bo gravelled, Jersey street, from Monro's to Scott's corner to be gravelled ; Victoria-street, the nils to be made up with clay and to be gravelled: Ohanpo road, from Thajkeray-street to Bint's corner to bo gravelled; Granthanstreetti be clayed and gravelled; Domain drain to be cleaned nut from end to end, (Nnte.—This can he charted to the Domain Board). Vincent's drain and public drain, east, to bo cleaned out; Hamilton East, about 4DO yards of gravel, will ho required: County mad, 13 chains reqirre gravelling and forming—Cr,Tippin asked who was present at the meeting of the Works Committee, and the Clerk stated Cr<. Jones and Qualtrough. Cr, Tippin said that no notice could bo taken nf the report, as there was no meotine, a quorum not being present.— The Mayor stated that in company with tbo chairman of the Works Committee ami tlm foreman of work.", ho had made an inspection nf tho various paitsof the borough, and nresenM a report on works of the borough, which ho considered required to be done, anil which .would cost of from £2OO to £240. He would like to see these works carried out at mice, as the effect would bo much hotter than if delayed for a inonth, He moved that the works as mentioned in tho report presented by him be carried out as far as funds will allnw, the most important works to take precedence.— Seconded by Cr. Qualtrough.-Cr. Reid saiil that he was sure the Council wero much obliged to tho Mayor for the tronblo he had taken, but he thought that the Council shiuld have had an opportunity to make the inspection with liiin,—The Mayor then, with the comont nl tho Council, withdrew hi'sfirstpropositioiiand moved that the works recommended in his report in Gr.intham-streot, and Rnstrevnr-street only, be gnno nn with, a« funds are available, CiMntham-fitreet to be taken first.Secnnded by Cr.
