MILK TESTING.

A large of number of those attending the forthcoming Shrnv will be interested in the testing the milk in the competition for Messrs Reynolds and Co.'s prizes. The machine that will be used is the invention of a, Dr. Babcock, and it gives the amount of butter fat contained in the milk with absolute certainty. We have witnessed severals trials made with this machine, but one that was made at Trecarne the other day, not only proves the test correct, but also demonstrates that Jersey cows are far and away ahead ot other breeds of cattle in butter making qualities. One day two samples of milk were tested, one from a Jersey cow and the other from an ordinary cow the result being 1G per cent, of butter fat from the former, and tlio latter only 9 per cent. Next day two more tests were made, both samples being taken from another Jersey cow, unknown to the operator, and the result was exactly 21 per cent, in each case. The operator was greatly astonished at the percentage and at the fact of both samples giving precisely similar results until he was told of the fraud that had been played upon him. At the price Reynolds and Co. iu-j paying for milk this would mean (id per gallon, in addition to the separated milk which is returned to the supplier. We trust there will be ;i large number of entries in class US.> for the conditions are most reasonable, and thu testing of milk is a matter that i--. of paramount importance to a great number of Waikato settlers.
