HUNTLY.
False Pretekces.—A man, calling himself T. M. Divis, was brought down by train from Cambridge to-dty. where he was arrested on Thursday, charged with obsaiuins; money by false pretences from Mre Hill, of Matahura. He was brought before two Justices of the Peace and remanded here. The accused on July Ist frandulently represented himself to Mrs Hill as an agent of the National Fire ami Mnriua Insurance Company, and effected a bogus insurance on her house for £300, cl arging her 253 per £100-a pretty, stiff rate for an isolated country house. The sum of £3 15s was paid him as the first year's annual premium and for which he gave a receipt written on a scrap of note paper signed T. M. Davi*. Mrs Hill Dot b-;ar-ing anything more of the nuittur communicated with the Auckland office and was told that they knew nothing of Mr Davis, he not being au authorised agent of that Company. Const. White, hearing that the party was in Cambridge, took out a warrant and ho was arrested. The accused who is out on bail will be brought before the Police Court on Monday the 22nd inst. Promotion.— Mr Brownell, our station master, has been notified of his appointn •it to the office of traffic inspector on the Duuedin section and leaves here next Wednesday to take up his new duties. Mr Bro.vnell may bo congratulated on his promotion as ho has always, been courteous and affable in his relations with the public. He has often rendered valu ■ able assistance at couuercs, held hero po?ses-iug a pleasant voice. It is hoped the district manager will send a good man to succeed him, as there is more traffic at Huntly than at any other station on the section, '
