Tho motion will not be dabated by "the Opposition. COMPENSATION'. The Compensation Hill was finally considered and adopted at a. meeting of a dozen members this forenoon. A petition has been signed by tho temperance party in Wellington, praying Parliament to reject any proposal " whatsoever intended to acknowledge a claim so unwarrantable and so inimical to the common rights of citizens of this colony " as compensation for nonrenewal of a publican's license. THE RIVAL ROUTES. The Premier promised a deputation of Northern members to-day tn set up :i committee to consider the evidence obtained durinu the recess as to the rival routes for the North Wand Main Trunk Railway. With regard to borrowing, aa suggested by one <if the deputation, Mr Ballanee said that such a proposal could not be entertained, as it would probably lead tn a demand for several millions to satisfy all parts of the colony. It is estimated that under the proposal made in the financial statement the sum of two hundred thousand pounds will be deposited in the Public Trust Office by foreign companies as surety to colonial policy holders. This sum will be used generally for tho benefit of settlors of the colony. CHARITABLE AID. During the iveess the Government intend to consider the whole question of charitable aid and adjust the subsidy system, so as to give weak local bodies a greater measure of aid than they now reeeivu.
