RIFLE MATCH.

TE AIVAMUTU MOUNTED RIFLES V. HAMILTON LIGHT INFANTRY. A MATCH between teams representing the a'l.ive companies was tired at the of the latter on Saturday afternoon last. 13-3-fore proceeding to the buttv the visiting team were entertained at lunchoun by the Hamilton Light Infantry, and it is only necessary to state that the catering was in the hands of Mrs Gwynne to (jive some idea of the excellence of the repast providod, and that lady's effm'ts tj please were much appreciated by her guest?. The chaplain of the local corps, (the Eβv. It. O'C. Biggs) was pressnt, and the other officers who lunched with the teams w?.rn Gauts. Bruce and Reid, Lieuts, Kjrk and Dyer. Immediately after lunch, a start was made for the range. The conditions nf the mutch were: Ranges, 200, 300, find 400 yards; five shots at each distance ; targets, at 200 and 300 yards, 4 x 4, bull's «ye Sin. diameter, inner, 18in., magpie 2ft. and outer remainder of target; ■100 yarJs, (! >: C target, bull's-eye 2ft diainnter, inner oft, maoruii! 4ft, and outer remainder of target. Tha marker's butts were In eh»rge of Bugler McKenzifi, and the .signalling was carefully performed. We may bo permitted to remark that the dummy target is in need of a c>at of paint, t\v> whits ringi thereon being now of a dirty slate cil'-nr, and when an outer is signalled, the black disc (and this disc was much in pvidem-e "n Saturday), shows v.sry indistim-tlv, even at 300 yards. Tlip weather win wreiched, lam falling nearly the whole time fie ni'itch was in progress, but even making allowance for this, the shooting was not Sj good as it should have been. On completing the firing at 200 yards, the visitintr team held a load of 13 points, which thvi local mini ruduci'd to four ;.t i>oo yards, but the To Awanmtii men naming another three points mi the local team at the last range, eventually won a close match by seven points. At the conclusion of the match, Capt. Rsid addressed a few words to thu men, stating it had piven his team great pleasure to meet their visitors, and although the balance of the grand totals was on the wrung side (an opinion not reciprocated by the Te Awamntu men, however), it would have one good effect in showing his men that they were not a.- good shuts ;n they thought they were, and perhaps induce them to practice more assiduously. He then culled for tluv.e cheers for their visitors and another for Capt. Bruce, which were lustily given. Capt. Bruce thanked the H imilton men fnr the kind manner in which his men had been entertained, and hoped to have the pleasure of meeting them npain dnriner the suminiumonths. Three cheers were heartily given by the Te AwainuJu men for their opposing team mid their captain, and the men then left the rangi. , after spending an enjoyahln day together, not with.it Hiding tho miserable weather.
