MR CADMAN AT ROTORUA.
» THE,MAORI TOLLS. (by telegraph.—own cirrkspondknt.) Rotoiiua. Last Night. Ml! Cadjcan is negotiating with the natives re the charges in connection with the sightseeing district. The attitude taken by ;he Minster is that if the natives try to enforce exorbitant charges there will oe such an outcry that the Government would exercise their right and take ten per cent, of the land for roads to those places, which will throw them open to nil. but that if the natives are willing to agree to a moderate fee, and will leave the settlement of tho whole question of charges and the collection of same to him, and will write to him to that effect, he will try and do what he can to help them. He proposes to fix a scale of fees for tho principal sights and arrange that tickets could be purchased at the hotels and other suitable places, aud that the money derived from their sale should be afterwards divided amongst tho natives who are entitled to share in tho proceeds somewhat on the same principle as miners' rights are dealt with at the Thames. So fur the natives appear quite agreeable to this.
