WELLINGTON NEWS.
(by telegraph.—press association). Wellington, Last Night. The Native Department state that there is no truth in tho rumour that Mr Seth Smith, Chief Judge of the Native Lind Court, contemplates resigning.
Tho Trades and Labour Council are as determined as ever to carry on the tramway strike, and a satisfactory report has been received from the committee appointed to secure 'buses for the employees whs' are still out. Lieut-Colonel Fox has inspected the defences at Wellington and found the guns and fortifications to be in good order. After conferring with Mr Seddon he will proceed to Aucklaud, afterwards visiting the stations in the South Island. He will not begin his formal instructions until he has made himself acquainted with the local conditions. The Trades and Labour Council has decided to write to Messrs Pinkerton, Sandford, and Kelly, asking them to address a mass meeting of Unionists, on their arrival In Wellington.
