AUCKLAND NEWS.
(by telegraph.—own correspondent). Auckland, Last Night. The Crown Lands Board to-day resolved to throw open from twenty to thirty thousand acres of land, unsurveyed at Whakatane, under the homestead system. At the Board of Education to-day, Mr Harrison, head-master of the Beresfordstreet school, wrote asking for a further inquiry stating that he would produce evidence which will clear his reputation. The Board granted the request and fixedlthe date of holding the further inquiry a fortnight hence, several members of the Board being now absent from Auckland. At the Northern Steamship Company's meeting to-day, the chairman said their prosperity was steadily increasing and they were able to pay a dividend of six per cent. The following telegram was forwarded this mornin? to Mr Reeves by Mr Shera: — "You have placed on the commission of the peace some men bitterly opposed to your labour friends. You have neglected to open labour bureaux here notwitstanding repeated promises ; tho strain is becoming too much."
