STRIKE OF TRAMWAY HANDS.

(by telegraph —press association). Wellington, Last Night. The grooms on the tramway struck this morning for an advauce ot wages from £7 to £9 per month, and all the hands except five went out. ... It appears from the men s version that the strike is not due to any special or isolatsd grievance, but rather of a longstanding dispute. They maintain that the two extensions of the tramway at the Thornton and Newtown ends, respectively, have made it impossible for the time-table to be kept, and soma recent slight reduction or modification in pay has caused fresh discontent. The men say that Mr Hill, the proprietor of the tramway, was frequently communicated with in regard to the grievances, but ho declined to comply to their terms, and no arrangement being possible, the employees went out this morning. Mr Hill, on the other hand, says he heard nothing of the grievances until a few days ago, and ha was even at that time informed by one of his employees that they were a'l satisfied with the existing arrangements. At the end of last week tho men had an interview with Mr Hall, and the arrangements for tho sejond interview being bungled, the Trades Council and employees met last evening, when the strike was resolved upon. No difficulties have been experienced in filling the vacancies, and a twenty minutes service instead of ten minutes is being run.
