Resident Doctor. —In accordance with notice of motion given at the last meeting, Mr Lang moved that application be advertised for a resident medical officer for the Hospital. He said he did not wish to oasf any blime upon the present surgeon, but he thought that the Hospital would be better conducted if the doctor gave his whole tune to the Hospital. They had a well furnished hospital, good instruments, an operating table bigger than in Wellington, and one not equalled in the colony. If the doctor is carrying on private practice and a serious accident happens which he has to attend, and a serious accident is taksti into the Hospital at the same time some harm may happen if the doctor has to leave his private patient. The doctor would not be to blame, but the Board would be answerable.—Mr McGuirk seconded tha motion, and said he thought the hospital would not be complete until a resident surgeon was appuiuted and he thought a well quail* fied one was to be had on reasonable terms. —Mr Herries thought they ought to know if a qualified man could be got for the sum they were paying, it would be foolishness to pay £300 or £400 more for an unqualified man. —Mr Browne said there was no question about the unqualified satisfaction the present doctor was giving as was shown by the fact that there had been lo or 10 refusals within a very short time.— Mr Bond thought the increased number of patients would pay for the increase in salary.—Mr Coates did not see how that could bo when each patient cost 8s per day and onlyJpaid 4s.—Mr Browne said he had had the misfortune to have been in hospitals all over the world, and that there were all sorts of accommodations, and sotn© at such prices which proved good investment* for the hospitals. He thought some scheme might be suggested for the treatment of private patients.—Mr Chepmell said he agreed with Mr Lang that the tune had come for the doctor to be restricted to the hospital, but thought it would be better brought up in a year hence. nfMr beddon agreed with Messrs Chepmell and Homes ; he was in favour of giving the surgeon a good salary, and of building more rooms for private patients. He would oppose the question this year.—Mr Davies said he had had a good deal of experience in hospitals, and he thought that the doctor should be in the building, particularly at night time. On the motion being put there voted for it Messrs Primrose, Bond, Davies, McGuirk, Teasdale, Lang, Herries and Anderson ; against, Messrs beddon, Coates, Chepmell and Browne. The motion was carried. Mr Coates then left the room. Some discussion then ensued upon salary, Mr Teasdale moving that it be £400 per year. This was seconded by Mr Herries. —Mr Chepmell moved that the salary be £400 per annum, and that_ until the Board can find a residence £50 for house rent be allowed. This was seconded by Mr Lang.—Mr Teasdale asked leave to withdraw his motion, which was granted, and the amendment became the substantive motion, and was carried unanimously.—lt was resolved to call applications for a resident surgeon, and that the advertisement be inserted m the following papers for three insertions :—rHE Waikato Times, New Zealaud Herald, Christchurch Press, Otago Daily Times, Wellington Times, Sydney Morning Herald (New South Wales), and Australasian (Victoria). The applications are to be in by the Ist June, and the doctor to be ready to accept office on July Ist, 1892. After some discussion, the conditions were left in the hands of the House Committee. Probationary Nursks. —Dr. Kenny wrote re the health of the statf, and suggested that two probationary nurses be appointed.—lt was resolved to call for applications, t > be in at the next meeting. Maxwell.—T'no Secretary reported having received a communication from Raglan that Maxwell was starving, and having sent the 2< Gil tli't Maxwell was in credit with the Board, and that he had replied that 1 e could not be admitted into the Refuge. Relief,—'The usual relief was granted for the month, with the exception of John son, whose allowance for himself and wife had been 12s Gd, but his wife had died ; therefore the allowance was made 4s, which , Johnson would sooner have than come into , the Refuge.^ _ mmmm
