A GHASTLY DISCOVERY.
(uv TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland. Last Night. A gruksomb discovery was made early this morning by Mess's Menzies and Burgess when bathing at Chelteham lVach. They noticed the receding tide had left on the beach near the North Head, the dead body of a middle aged woman. Mr Menzies pulled the body above high water mark, but life had been extinct for somo hours. Deceased was comfortably clad in a blank dress, and wore black stockings. Hor hand grasped a black morocco hand bag containing two handkerchiefs, a bottle of musk and lavender scent, a reel of cotton and a pair cf spectac'es. Deceased who was about 40 years of age, had dark brown hair, and artificial teeth, and in height was about sft. 4in. There were no wounds beyond some disfigurement of the face by the depredations of small fish. It is highly prnoable that deleaved had been trying to walk round the North Head from Cheltenham to Devonporf, and probably missing her footing was precipitated into water near the Fort jetty. The eddy of high tide here probably deposited her body where it was dscovered. The body has not been indentified.
