RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

OPENING CEREMONY. (BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION). Trentkam, Last Night. Thb thirty-first annual meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association was opened this afternoon. The entries total 245, which is a few less than was expected. This mornins a meeting of competitors was called, when Major Somroerville explained that the trench had not been cut parallel with the firing points, there being a difference of eleven yards at No. 25 target, with a gradual decrease down to No. 1 target. He explained the error had not been discovered in time to be rectified, as it. would have necessitated a farther adjournment of the meeting. The men accepted the explanation by acclamation, and ac corded Major Sommervilla a vote of thanks for it. A suggestion that the range be chrißtened "Sommerville," in recognition of the chairman's long and valuable services in the interests of shooting, met with warm approval. The difficulty of securing a caterer has led to a dispute about the men living out of camp, and the council will enquire into the matter. The prize money in the Wellington match has been reduced from £120 to £80. Later. At 2.30 this afternoon, Mrs Reeves, wife of the Minister of Justice, in the absence of Mrs Ballance, fired the first shot, registering a bull's eye. The Minister of Justice delivered a short speech to the men, declaring that the Government was in favour of the volunteer movement, and instanced their appointment of the commandant, who came with the highest credentials, and who, he believed, would be the right man in the right place. The Wellington match was then proceeded with, but only the 500 yds. and GOOyels. were completed when the cease tiring sounded. The following are the principal scores, but the 200 yds. is not yet fired. The match will be concluded tomorrow morning Cameron (Tenui) 58 Ross (Napier) 5S Bunting (Palmerston) 57 Stead (Auckland) 57 Jackson ( Wellington) 57 Humphries (Napier) 57 Harding (Blenheim) 56 Okey (Taraoaki) 56 Evans (Christchurch) 5G
