NATIVE LANDS.
INTERVIEW "WITH MR JAMES CARROLL. (by telegraph—own correspondent). Auckland, Last Night. Mr James Carroll, the recently appointed native member of the Executive left for Wellington to-day by the Talune to bo sworn in. Mr Carroll will set to work at once in his new sphere of labour with a view toßubmittn Parliament some comprehensive scheme for opening up native lands. In conversation with a Star reporter Mr Carroll stated that he is acquainted with the Kiug Country having been there recently as one of the Native Land Laws Commissioners. The scheme to be submitted by Messrs Cadman and Jno. McKenzie on their visit to the Kingite natives next week is we understand to be somewhat on these lines: that on the condition that the Government are permitted to obtain by purchase certtin blocks of land for settlement purposes the natives shall be allowed to dispose of the balance of their lands as -they please, always provided that due care is taken to prevont the natives themselves becoming landless. The native land in tho North Island averages only about 200 acres per head for the native population and great care will have to be tikfn to prevent the Maoris becoming a burden upon the country which must inevitably happen if sufficient land is not retained for them to exist on. .
