TROUT IN THE PUNIU.
A CORRESPONDENT under date March Ist in Kihikihi sends U3 Hie following particulars of a large trout which was recently caught by the Maoris in the Puniu river:—"l send the following information for your perusal. On Saturday last whilst the natives woru enjoying themselves bathing and spearing eels they accidentally came upon a large fish under a log which they supposed to be an eel, but from the description given to me I at once decided that it was a salmon trout. It weighed 161b and was full of ova when caught. Mr Firth and Rewi distributed Californian ova in the Puniu river many years ago and this fish ib probably one of the survivor."
