OUR DEFENCES.

IN AN EFFICIENT STATE,

(by telegrafh.—press association). Wellington, Last Nigh*. Captain Burke, of H.M.S. Ringarooma. has expressed great satisfaction with bis inspection of the forts. He says they are now all but completed, the permanent ground mines being laid and excellent gun practice made. Captain Burke considered it would be almost impossible for a ship to lodge a shot in the forts. _ The latter are being furnished with Mectric search lights and the equipment will then be complete.
