WELLINGTON REGATTA.

Though a lively southerly breeze has been blowing all day with showers at frequent intervals some thousands of people went away by traiu holiday making; in every respect the day was kept a close holiday. The breeze .vas too strung fur the reeatta and.the Second Class Yacht Race would have been postponed had not the Mapu to return to Auckland to-morrow. As it win all the boats hud t<i go out double reefed. In the First Class Championship £100 and trophy only Mima, Maritana and Mawotle were entered. The first named got away lialf-a- mile head of tho others who were over tho line when the gun fired but before the end she had had enough and dropped out. The Mascotte which hails from Lyttelton won easily as was expected, the Maritana being a bad second. In the Second-class Championship ot £40 the Thetis, Mapu, Onanu, Jessie Logan, Isca, and Matiina started. The Carina was scratched. Theru was too much sea running at the heads fur the Jessie Lagan and she had to return. The Thetis lost considerable timej at the start through nut being ready but had nearly made it up on rounding tho buoy for the first time the Mapn, the Auckland yacht, being only five minutes a head of her. Goinjj round the second time however the Mapu increased her lead and won comfortably. The Thetis fell off and was beaten by the Isca with the Matiina third. The Onanu, the Lytteiton yacht, which had been greatly fancied lost owing to the rough weather. Tho rest of the programme was postponed till to-morrow
