ARE HEARTS GROWN DEAD?
TO I'HE EDITOR. SiH,—"The Miners Federation rejected a motion, that a message ot condolence be sent to Her Majesty," upon the untimely death of her grandson. Can utter meanness, utter callousness, utter depravity further go ? At time of death and affliction, and the wreck of earthly hope, is it not right and proper to recognise " that one touch of nature makes the whole world kin ?" Contrast the action of the uncultured working man in the hey-day of his strength with that of the cultured working man, Henry Edward Manning, in the hour of his greatest earthly weakness, and say which yju most honestly admire. And yet there are men ! (God save the mark !) who would applaud the action of the working miner and condemn as puerile and unworthy the wish of the worker and the gentleman. lam as liberal in my notions of Government as any man may wish, but were I ever so radical in my ideas I would scorn to range myself under the banner of those who could be so churlish as to decline to extend their sympathy in such a case, and sink their petty political prejudices in the presence of so much sorrow.—l am, etc., C. 13.
