KUSABS BROS. NEW SAW MILL.

[bt otm travelling contiEsposnKN'T.] It must have beon a Ronrce of wonder to many, whore all tho sawn timber that is produced in Waikato goes to. The various mills always seem to be busy. Timber laden waggons and railway trucks, are to bo observed almost daily, yet we never come across tho rows ol new houses going up. However the timber is absorbed in a variety of ways other than house building, a larger quantity than most people suppr so being used iu the dairy, orchard, and apiary business, and the question arisos, what will bB dono when all these bushes nro cut out, a contingency that is not so very far distant. The latest addition to the list of saw-mills is that of Ktisabs Bros., situated near Ohaupo. This has been erected at tho edge of a kahikatea bush, which is estimated to contain 3,000,000 feet of good timber. The land was recently purchased from the Government by Messrs Kusitbs and they are cutting up the timber —to save its life —if I may use a well known colonialism. This means, that if the bush does not go in one way, it will another. The railway drains having drained the land —or rather surface upon which tho bush stands, for there is not much solid land to iw seen —the tree', many of them SO feet to the fir-t branch, are left standing high and dry upon a Hat network of roots. These have evidently depended largely upon water for their sustonance, for now that drainago has taken tho water off, the trees topple over, without any warning, in the strangest manner, and before showing any signs of I decay in either leaves or branches. In this respect, it is a dangerous place to work in. The mill itself, which started activo operations last week, is very complete for a country saw-mill, and was erected wholly by Kusab Bros., wlk. seem to be natural mechanics. Aime of the improvements eftectod by tliem in connection with the working of the machinery itra very ingenious, mid show that our young mon, when they have the taste for engineering, are not without ability. The machinery was supplied by Messrs Beaney and Co., of Arch Hill, and is very massive aud strong. From this mill all the kahikatea required for the firm's timber trade will be supplied. Some large orders from Matamata and Woodlands are now ou hand. In spito of its business aspect, it seems a pity to see tho natural forests going so fast, but like the aboriginal, 1 suppose, it is their fate to disappear befora the presence of the white man.
