WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the above council wtts heltl in the Council Chambers, Ohaupo, mi Tuesday, when there were present : Messrs Lang (chairman), Shepherd, ICnsab-t, Exolby, Smith, Anderson, Finch, and Teasdale. Tho Engineer, Mr Armstrong, was also in attendance. Engineer's Report.—The Engineer reported that the forming and sanding contract on tho To Awamutu-Ohaupn road near the flour-mill was nearly completed. The repairs to the Waipa bridge at Alexandra would be. finished in a fortnight. Tho Engineer said that since ho had made a further examination of the bridge ho had found that it was not safe, and recommended that only light traffic bo allowed to pass over it. The briars have been removed from the road at Whatawhatn. Arrangements havo been made to replace a small culvert on the Ttihikaramea roai. The draining on the swamj) roatl, Rotorangi, is being completed, and tho repairs mi the Frontier road, Mangapiko district, aro finished.—The report, was received. Waipa Bridge.—lt was resolved to pnt up a notice on this bridge intimating that it was unsafe for heavy traffic. —The contractor wrote, asking for an extension of time to do the work on this bridge. The Engineer not offering any objection, the request was granted. Road Deviation. —It was resolved to do the work recommended on Bottle's property, as contained in the Engineer's re.liort. The work consists of forming and grading a new road which Mr Buttle has offered in jilace of (he one at in-es'.ut used. Crossing.—Mr 11. Del'icar wrote asking for a bridge across a drain in front ot his jiroperty, which had been mado by the lato Hamilton Road Board.—lt was resolved to reply that the work cannot be done. Exceeding Instructions.—ln reply to a letter from the Council, enquiring why he had exceeded the engineer's instructions, Thomas Cowley rep'iod saying that he had understood his instructions to be for the work he had done.—The Engineer said no noubt Cowley had misunderstood him, and thought this was fair value for the work done.—The account, amounting to £G2s(Jd, was jiassed for payment, and a strong letter was ordered to bo written to Cowley, advising him to be more careful in future, as this case would bo no precedent. Swamp Drain.—Mr Gardner wrote saying ho was not prepared to advauco further on"his offer to contribute one-third of the cost of clearing this drain through Ruknhia. —No rejily having been received from the Railway Department, the matter was allowed to stand over. Ngaruawahia.— The railway authorities wrote asking that the trees near the railway station at Ngarnawahia be cut down.—This matter, together with some repairs to the Brewery Hill, was left with the engineer and Cr. Shepherd. ttt Sheep and Stock Acts.—Mr W. A. P. Sutton, Sheep Insjiector, Hamilton, was thanked for his thonghtfulness in providing tho county with cojiies of the Sheep and Stock Acts. Poisoned Wheai-.— Mr Andarson, of Kihikihi, wrote asking foi 20!hs. of poisoned wheat—lt was resolved that as no other local bodies were moving in this matter, thev would not do so either. Mangapiko Road Board Ferns.—Tho state of funds of this Board which was lately merged into the County Council was :-Liabdities: £4 10s Sd ; assets: £39 Ss 101. Balance, £34 18s 2d. Resignation.—Mr James Farrell, the Rangiaohia member of the Council, sent in his resignation.—Regret was expressed by the Council that Mr Farrell should have resigned as he was a most useful member. Si'ndries.—Mr Exelby was authorised to emjiloy a man on Stokes' Bush Road for a couple of days.—The engineer was instructed to report on some work on the Paterangi road, which reqairod doing. Valuation.—Mr McCutchenn wroto asking that the valuation on his property be reduced to £400, ns land had fallen considerably in value since it had been made. A reply was ordered to be sent saying the Council could not com|)ly with tho request. Rates.—The rjMutinns for making tho rates moved at laißrreeting, wore confirmed. Overdraft.-=W? *lerk was instructed to comjily with-tne neiessary formalities for obtaining an overdraft _ Riding Accounts. -VTlip following is the state of the riding adconnts :—ln credit: Tuikaramea, £5 10s; 'Hamilton, £07 10<. Tn debt: Newcastle, £29718s 9d; Pukekura, £309 4s 8d ; Mangapiko, .£solos 4d; Rangiawhiu, £45 13s Bd. The amounts expended on bridges and culverts, were: Newcastle, £193 12s 7d ; Hamilton. £25 18s; Pukekura, £357 3s lid ; Mangapiko, £02 7s 21.
