CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The above body met on Tuesday. Present: Cis. J. H. Priestley (the Mayor), J. Hally, ■L Webber, J. Young, J. Robertson, .1. S. Bond. The Balance-sheet.— The Audit Office returned the borough balance-sheet, which was duly signed bv the Mayor, and is now open for inspection at tho council office. Crown Lands.—Several letters were iece.ived re this matter. Tho clerk of the Wa'qia County Council had already communicated with Mr Bryco, ns had also Colonel Eraser, M.H.R, who stated he would endeavour tn pet extended leases introduced into the Land Bill when iu committee. The Ngaruawahia Town Board agreed with the council's suggestions, and also thought that the Rural Powers Act should be extended to boroughs and townships that theso landt: may bo taken up under the Perpetual Lease Act, Deferred Payment, or for cash purchase.—These wero all received.

A Bazaar.—Tho Wesleyans wrote, stating they intended holding a bazaar m the store latelv ocenjued by Lewis and Simpson on September 18th anil 19th, and they asked tho council if they would let them have the room adjoining the Council Chamber as a refreshment room ; and, if so, on what terms !—lt was resolved that tho room bo gianted free of charge.—The Mayor, on behalf of the Wesleyans, returned thanks. _ The Hospital.—The Hospital Board asked to have the balance of contribution duo (£22 10s) before Ist September, as the subsidy of £1 for £1 would cease at the end of this month.—lt was decided to pay the amount forthwith. The Domain Gravel Pits.—The resolutions agreed to by the joint committee of tho Council and Domain Board wero submitted and were unanimously adopted.— The carrying out of tho arrangement was loft to the Finance Committee and Cr. Webber.

I The Discharged Hospital Patient.— Mr R. B. Fitzpatrick, who was lately discharged from tho Hospital, sent a very lengthy letter to the Council. —He was referred to the Charitable Aid Board.—The Mayor said he presumed the letter was an application for relief, but it was really a justification of his conduct when in the Hospital. Finance.—Overdraft on 14t.h July, £309 0s Gd ; accounts paid during the month, £87 17s sd; amount lodired durinK the month, £22; accounts to pass for payment, £29 18s ; overdraft when accounts are liaid, £404 13s lid.—The report was approved and adopted. Accounts.—The following accounts wore liassed for payment:—Waikato Hosjiital Board, £22 10s; 11. Preece, £3 ; F. W. Bnckland, £2 3s; J. McCormish, £1 10s; J. Meredith, 9s; T. Wolls, (is. The Licensinc Clerk.—The Legal and Finance Committeo recommended that tho clerk of the Licensing Committee lie not paid the usual salary of £3 3s.—Cr. Hally thought the clork should he jiaid, but Cr. Bond contended that he was appointed by tho Minister of Justice, and should bo provided for by him.—lt was resolvod to ascertain if towns of a similar size paid their licensing clerks, and if so to what amount. Works. — The Works Committeo ra-

ported that since last meeting of the Council the surfaceman had been employed twelve davs, two day* of which were encaged clearing briars, cleaning bridge and repairing tho road between the two bridges, ihreo days putting in sumph in Williamstreet, near to Kelly's, and the balance cleaning wator-tahles within the borough. J. McConrish had graded tho |iit in Wil-liam-street West, at a cost of 25s.—Tho report was adopted. Boimnwi.vi Monky.—lt was resolved to support the application of tho Ashburtin County Council to enable Councils to borrow money from private individuals. — The clerk was instructed to write to the member for the district asking him to support, the amendment proposed to the Countios Act. IiKTIRING CoUSCILL'MtS.—Civ. _ Webber, Young and Bach aro the councillors that retire by rotation. The necessary steps were taken to fill the vacancies.
