A LUCKY ESCAPE.

Tin-: returning" excursionists from Mercer on Saturday, little dreamt how near they were to a tragic curling of their day's outing. Kvoryone on th. 1 . tram will no doubt have a distinct recollection of a sudden shock to the train a little way down the line below Frankton. There were some passeneersrn board who from previous experiences concluded that tho engine had run into some unfortunate beast. This conclusion proved to be correct, ns a report came in on Sunday morning that two head of cattle weia lying alongside line ?, t this spot sadly injured. Th it a very serious accident will take place on this portion of the line some of the*e days is as sure as possible to happen, for of the larco number of cuttle injured annually on the Waikato lines, by far the greatest proportion fall victims on this particular section. Representations have repeatedly been made to the authorities to get this portion of the line fenced, but the question of co«t lias always b-en putforward as a rmson for not having it done. Should an accident of a serious nature take place, orders would at once bo issued to have the fencing erected. Prevention is better than cure, and after tho lucky escape from u disastrous accident, the subject might well be brought under tho notice of the Commissioners again.
