THE LATE ACCIDENT AT HUNTLY.
Fon some time past rumours have been current that a further enquiry would be made in connection with the accident which occurred on December 26th at the new dip in Messrs Ralph's mine, at Huntly. It will be remembered that; at tho inquest Mr George Wilson, Mining Inspector, was constantly ill attendance, and elicited some important information as to the workiug of the mine, and since then hn has been a great deal of his time at Huntly, watching the excavation of tho part of the dip that collapsed. As an outcome of his investigations, two charges havo been laid under "The Goal Mines Acc 1S80"; ono against William Collins, manager of tho mine, and the other against the three contractors for working the diD— : Messrs James McLollan, John -Kay and William Montgomery. The following is the I full text of the two informations laid (11 That William Collins on the 22nd December 18!»0 at Huntly being the manager of Ralph's Taupiri coal mine unlawfully did contravene Rulo 0 of the general rulos set forth ill Section 2t> of the Coal Minos Act 1880 by omitting to make safe for persons employed therein a certain excavation in connection with the woruing of tho said mine called the new dip it being then reasonably practicable to make the same safe tor persons employed therein , (2) that James McLellan John Kay and William Montgomery on tho 22nd December 1890 at Huntly being porsons other than owners agents or managers employed in a mine at Huntly aforesaid to wit in Ralph's Taupili mine unlawfully were guilty of an omission which in the case of an owner agent m manager would be an offence against The Coal Mintw Act 18S0 via that tho said James Mclje.lan John Kay and William Montgomery being so employed as aforesaid did omit to make safe for persons employed therein as prescribed by Rule 1) Section 20 of the general rules net forth in Thß Cofil Mines Act 18S0 a certain in connection with the working of the said rmuo callof. the new dip it being then reasonably practicable to make the same safe. J.lie cases will bo heard bofora Captain JackoOii, R.M.. at Huntly, on Wednesday next. Mr W. M. Hay, instructed by Mr Wilson, will appear for the Government.
