Ciiors.—Harvesting is now in full swing in this district, and crops are apparently of average quantity. Tho small bird nuisince has in many instances compelled farmers to cut rather too early to .secure themselves somewhat from their depredations. Picnic,—The childrens' annual picnic cmne off on Friday last, at the J unction Farm, Puniu. thanks to the kindness of the Messrs Stokes, who granted the use of their fine grounds for the occasion. A large number of adults and children were present, and all enjoyed themselves immensely, thn weather being all that could be desired. The usual games, races, etc. were indulged in most of tho youngsters winning prizes. The late lamentod Mr G. Mills was greatly missed on the occassion, by the juveniles especially; but his mantle has fallen on the shoulders of his son George who was most energetic in forwarding tho children's amusement from the commencement until the finale. The committee of ladies and others including Mrs G. Harper, Mrs J. Bayliss, Mrs Westnay, the Misses Wills, Finch, and Bowden, were all indefatigable both in forwarding the amusements of the day, as also in that important part of it the commissariat department, which was both provided and dispensed by them in a most liberal manner, all enjoying themselves heartily until near sundo.vn. Mr T. Finch jnr., was judge of the races and gave every ■jatisfaction. Vehicles were kindly provided for the transport of the children and others both to and from the farm by Messrs G. Finch, G. Milos, E. Garmonsway, Haipua and others. Cheers were heartily given to the Messrs and Misses Stokes before leaving and also to their entertainers. Dance.—ln the evening after tho picnic the usual dance took place in the Public Hall and was kept up with spirit until an early hour next morning. A Big Egg.—As the big gooseberry season has now passed, big epgs are the topic here. Mr McDonald claims the cake as owning the hen who has laid the largest egg this season. Hero are tho dimensions: 4in. round the centre, Sin. round the apex, and weight 4 ounces. He says : " Beat it who can."
