OTHER MAORI ELECTORATES.
DEATH OF A CANDIDATE. (nv TELEGIIAFH —OWN CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, Last Night. Hon. E. Mitchklson has received the following telepfram from Mr Bush, R,M. "Sydney Taiwhanga died last ni?ht at Whakatane. It is stated from asthma." Taiwhanga, ex M.H.R., was a candidate for both the Eastern and Northern Maori electorates, and it is just possible that his death may cause the holding of fresh elections for those districts. The polls were taken in the Maori electorates yesterday, and if Taiwhanga lias been returned in either instance, there will, of course, be a fresh election, and if his death took place between the day of nomination and day of election the result would be the same.
Mr Mitchelson received the following information this afternoon regarding the poll for the Maori electorates :—
Northern Maori Elegtohaib. —Sydney Taiwhanga heads the Northern poll by over 100 votes. Ten more returns are yet to come in.
Eastern Maori Electorate.—The result of the poll so far as the returns have come in are :—Carroll, G33; Wi J'ere, 491; Taiwhanga, 31; Rimuni, 2 ; Sturm, 1. Southern Maori Electorate.—Moaku, 79; F. Porak, 75; Taiaroa, 55; 11. Ellison, 18. Ten returns are yet to coine in.
