(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, Last Ni«ht. THK direct mail services have been arranged so fur as the Imperial Government are concerned. A strong effort was made by the Impeiial Government to get the Now Zealand Government to have the rate by Brindisi reduced to a.'.d so that there wnu d be a universal rate of in force, but the New Zealand Government pointed out that the reduction could not bo made without the consent of Parliament, and also reminded the House authorities that tho Brindisi rate had already been reduced from Is to fid. Tho New Zealand Government promised to hriuu' the question of tho further reduction to under the consideration of Parliament when they next meet, and the Imperial authorities expressed themselves as satisfied with this understanding, therefore the resolutions as passed by the House last session were virtually agreed to by the Imperial Government.

Mr Cecil Raikes, British PostmasterGeneral, cables to the Government that the delay in bringing into operation the postal reduction, has been caused by Western Australia, not yet having given its adhesion. If the Infer concurs, the reduction will begin on January Ist.
