The new member is a Protectionist and a supporter of unionism. Biusmank, October 27. In the Legislative Assembly, Sir S. Griffiths brought down a statement dealing fully with the proposal for giving partial autonomy to the narlhern and central parts of Queensland. The statement declares that while Mr McCrossan's proposal that the territorial separation of the northern portion of the colony is desirable, and it would have been accepted three years ago, it is now too late, as the northern part of the colony is determined to have total separation. At present it is uncertain whether the question will bo further debated this session. Melbourne, October 27. The steamer Age, bound from Adelaide, broke her shaft, and rapidly drifted past the Heads and Wilson's promontory towards the eastward. Ten of the crew, 111 one of the ship's boats, reached the shore, with difficulty, to got assistance for the disabled steamer. Three men were drowned in Hobson's Bay yesterday by the capsizing of a boat in a gale. The difficulty with the slaughtermen has been settled. Two lsrge fires occurred at Newcastle yesterday, a saw-mill and a block of ten brick houses being destroyed. The damage is estimated at £7,000.
