(BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION',) GIIEYMOUTH, Last Night. Seyex Union Wharf lumpers asked for work to-day, and they arc now discharging the* Brunnor in company with free labour men. The other Unionist did not apply, and apparently they do not intend to. The majority of the coal miners believe that the companies will soon get tired of the free labourers 111 the coal mines, and they will try and hold out till then when the companies will be glad to get them back again.

NELSON, Last Night. Early this morning John Webster, third son of Malcolm Webster, a wellknown old citizcn, shot liimself through the head with a rifle. Deceased was heard to leave the house at four this morning, and not having returned an hour later, his brother went to look for him, and heard a shot from an unoccupied house close by. Death was instantaneous. Deceased, who was 21) years of age, was a fine young fellow, and a general favourite. Twelve months ago he met with a fall 011 the back of his head, and ever since he has been subject to fits of depression. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. In response to the request of an influential deputation Mr Manning the present Mayor, consented to offer himself for re-election. It is understood that ten of the railway hands who were suspended have been re-engaged and the others will be taken 011 when vacaneics occur. It is said that those who have returned practically renounced the Railway Servants' Society as at present constituted. Neither of the evening papers publish to-morro n. The solicitors and several tradesmen advertisetlieir intention of closing at 1 o'clock. An advertisement in the papers to-night reiterates the intention of the Retailers' Asaociationnot to close. Some of the Mercantile offices will close at noon. Yesterday evening William Rose, of the Seaforth flaxmill, Mount Thomas, was drowned in crossing the Ashlej. A party of three were fording the river from Cust when Rose was washed down and not afterwards seen. The body has not'yet been found. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The Typographical Society has decided to discontinue their levy of 2s Od per week to the strike fund.
